IVU´s Chair - Marly Winckler

MARLY WINCKLER BRAZIL Marly Winckler is a sociologist and translator. She is the translator of more than 60 books including Animal Liberation by Peter Singer and Becoming Vegetarian by Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis. Vegetarian since 1983 she created “Sitio Vegetariano”– the first webpage on vegetarianism in Portuguese–and the first discussion lists on vegetarianism in Portuguese and Spanish: veg-brasil and veg-latina (now ivu-latina). Latin American and Caribbean Coordinator of the International Vegetarian Union since 2000 to 2013. President and founder of the Brazilian Vegetarian Society since 2003. IVU chair since 2012. She lives in Florianopolis, the beautiful Island which hosted the 36th IVU World Vegetarian Congress in 2004, organized by her.

Vegetarianism in the agenda of Rio+20

As it was expected, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development failed in its main purpose of establishing a global project to effectively tackle the current environmental and social crisis. The international organized civil community however participated in the multiples events all over the city of Rio de Janeiro. People´s Summit  - the nine-day gathering was being held as a side event to the UN summit in Rio de Janeiro, taking place especially in the Aterro do Flamento, a large urban park, extending eight km by the sea.
